VDOT puts $44.5 million Route 66 bridge replacement in Fauquier County out to bid

Order A98 is the largest job on VDOT's Nov. 18 letting, with a time limit running into 2029.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is taking bids on a $44.5 million bridge replacement on Route 66 in Fauquier County, the largest single order on its Nov. 18, 2026 letting.

VDOT's Construction Advertisement Bulletin Board (CABB) lists the job as order A98, state project 0066-030-543 with structure designation B632. The description is simply "Bridge Replacement." CABB gives the location as 0.280 miles west of Broad Run, lists a value of $44,539,000, and sets a time limit of May 21, 2029. As of Oct. 30 the order had two notices posted and electronic plans available, and CABB showed no required site showing.

How big is it?

A98 accounts for about 16% of the $273.6 million in value advertised for the Nov. 18 letting. It is more than three times the size of the next-largest order, a $13.6 million plant-mix paving schedule. Among the eight bridge, structure and culvert orders on the letting, which total $71.2 million, A98 alone is $44.5 million, or about 63%.

The value CABB lists is VDOT's figure for the order; actual bids may come in above or below it. CABB does not publish an engineer's estimate range in the advertisement table, and this site has not seen the plans.

What the advertisement does not say

The CABB listing does not describe the bridge type, the feature crossed, traffic staging or the number of spans. Those details are in the proposal and plans, which bidders get through CABB's electronic plan links. Readers should treat any description beyond what is quoted above as unconfirmed until the plans are reviewed.

Who can bid

VDOT requires prequalification to bid on its construction contracts. The department's prequalification page says first-tier subcontractors must also be prequalified unless the contract says otherwise, and that the review may take up to 60 days from receipt of an application. VDOT's list of prequalified vendors is updated weekly on Wednesday. This site's Fauquier County hub lists the VDOT-prequalified contractors and DPOR-licensed firms with addresses in the county.

Bonds and payment protection

Because this is a Commonwealth-funded transportation project well above $350,000, Code of Virginia 搂 2.2-4337 requires the winning contractor to provide a performance bond and a payment bond, each equal to the full contract amount. The payment bond protects subcontractors and suppliers, who cannot file mechanics' liens against public property.

Under 搂 2.2-4341, a claimant who does not have a direct contract with the prime contractor must give the prime written notice within 90 days after the claimant last performed labor or furnished materials. Any suit on the payment bond must be brought within one year after the day the claimant last performed labor or furnished materials. Subcontractors pricing work on A98 should put those dates in their job files from day one.

Subcontracting opportunities

A bridge replacement of this size typically involves demolition, earthwork, piling or drilled shafts, reinforcing steel, concrete, structural steel or prestressed beams, guardrail, traffic control and paving. Which of those trades are needed here depends on the plans. Subcontractors and suppliers can check the CABB plan-holder list for A98 to see which primes have taken out plans and send them quotes.
